How craftsmanship, material and a personal idea came together in the first Zootage Connection Charm.
When the idea for Zootage first began to take shape, one question came before everything else: what should this little companion feel like?
It was never meant to be simply a miniature version of a pet. I wanted it to feel like an object you would genuinely want to carry — something personal enough to represent an animal you love, yet refined enough to sit naturally alongside a favourite handbag.
That thinking shaped the first Zootage Connection Charm.
Choosing Leather
Leather became central to the design from the beginning.
Beyond my own familiarity with the material, I was drawn to the way leather develops character through touch, movement and time. Unlike something made simply to be displayed, a charm attached to a bag becomes part of everyday life.
But creating something new did not necessarily mean using newly produced material.
Leather workshops often have smaller pieces left after producing larger leather goods. These pieces may be too small for a handbag, but the leather itself remains perfectly usable.
For Zootage, their scale made sense.
We began giving selected leftover leather a new purpose, transforming smaller pieces into the individual parts of our charms.
It became a way of working that felt naturally connected to the product: taking something that already existed and turning it into something worth keeping.
Made by Hand
A Zootage charm may be small, but making one involves considerably more detail than its size suggests.
Individual leather pieces are cut and assembled to build the character of each animal. Small differences in ears, markings, proportions and colour combinations can completely change the expression of a design.
This is why handcrafting became such an important part of the process.
Rather than pursuing absolute uniformity, the making process allows the character of the material and the small variations of handwork to remain visible.
The result is not intended to feel mass-produced.
It is an object made slowly enough for the details to matter.
Made to Become Personal
The final part of the idea comes from the person carrying it.
Different strap colours allow each charm to take on a different character, while personalisation adds a name that belongs specifically to the animal it represents.
This small detail changes the relationship with the object.
It is no longer simply a dog charm or a cat charm.
It becomes your dog, your cat, or a reminder of someone with a very particular place in your life.
And because it was designed to be carried on a handbag or alongside other personal belongings, the charm becomes part of the owner’s own style as well.
Where Companionship Meets Design
This balance continues to influence how we think about products at Zootage.
We are interested in the emotional world surrounding our animals, but equally in material, proportion, craftsmanship and the way an object fits into everyday life.
The Connection Charm was our first expression of that idea.
